Group „Zagreb“: Alina Kadyrova, Ainhoa Estrada, Abraham Penasco, Abril Alcantara, Alfredo Betancourt Our first visit was to the History Museum of Zagreb. There we saw an exibition about the ship „Gagliana Grosa“, which was sank on his way from Venice to Constantinople. This ship was made in Venice in 1569, but the owner was Eduarno Gagliano. It is believed that the ship sank because it was overlaoded, but it might have also been attacked by pirates.
The ship transported goods; clothes, cooper, ceramic and glass vessels, etc. In 1967 Belgium divers found the ship in Adriatic Sea and stole some of the stuff that was found, but the rest of the things remain at History Museum. Here we saw a silk damas, which was found inside of a chest from the XVIth century and some brass lightning elements as well as high quality glass and some daily use stuff. On the other hand we also learned about Croatian National Revival, which was in the XIX century from 1835 – 1848.
At that time Croatia was divided into three parts: Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia, which was influented by different neighbour counties. People who lived in different parts of the country had their own dialects and could not communicate with each other. As a result Ljudevit Gaj made the first basis for Croatian Language to unify the country, and some time later they used songs to spread and share ideas to people who weren’t able to read or write so that they could feel a sense of belonging.
In 1835 the national anthem „Our beautiful homeland“ was made by Antun Mihanovic, which talked about their different landscapes. They also had a special way of dressing, using red, blue and silver. These colors would also be the ones representing the national flag, which was made by Ban Josip in 1848. This flag is divided in three colors, in the middle it has a shield with 25 red and white chessboard squares and 5 symbols at the top representing the 4 main regions of Croatia and a star which represents a legend (Danitza).
To conclude we can say that even if Croatia is a small country it has a very rich history and its culture was very influenced by neighbour countries. Now it has its own identity and people our proud of their country and the way it developped, so that now it is a unified nation. Besides we had fun and it was an enriching experience to know more about the origins of Croatia, its history, legends, and traditions.
