Derek Jeter was born June 26, 1974 in New Jersey. His father was a Ph. D, substance abuse counselor and his mother an accountant. During his childhood they tried to reinforce the ideas of proper behavior by making him sign a contract every year that set acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. They also did not allow him to use the word “can’t”. His father played shortstop for Fisk University in Tennessee. His sister played softball in high school she was a star also, she is five years younger than Jeter. When Derek was 4 his family moved to Kalamazoo Michigan.
When school was out during the summer him and his sister would go back to New Jersey and stay with his grandparents. His grandparents would take them to New York Yankees games. Watching Dave Winfield is what sparked his interest in baseball and inspired him to go after a career in baseball. He won numerous awards during his senior year of high school. He won All-State honorable mention, Kalamazoo area B’nai B’rith Award for scholar Athlete, 1992 High School Player of the Year Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association, 1992 Gatorade High School Player of the Year and USA Today’s High School Player of the Year.
Kalamazoo High School inducted Derek into their Hall of Fame in 2003 and renamed its baseball field after him in 2011. He is highly competitive, he had once said, “If you are going to play at all, you’re out to win. Baseball, board games, Jeopardy! I hate to lose. ” He was drafted out of high school in 1992 and debuted in the Major League of Baseball in 1995. He has played 18 seasons in the MLB for the New York Yankees. He won both All-Star Game MVP and World Series MVP in 2000. While with the Yankees they have won the World Series 5 times. He is the Yankees team captain and his nicknames are “Captain Clutch” and “Mr. November” because of his outstanding post season performances during play offs. He is the Yankees all- time leader in hits (3,304), games played (2,585), stolen bases (348), and at bats (10,551). Derek has been chosen to play in the All-Stars 13 times. Derek has won 5 Golden Glove awards, 5 Silver Slugger awards, 2 Hank Aaron awards and a Roberto Clemente award. He is the all-time leader in hits by a short stop in the MLB. Everyone that knows him even his opponents say that he is a professional and one of the best players of his generation.
Most sports writers believe that as soon as he retires he will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame unanimously. Jeter has done things for the community also he has created a foundation called Turn2 Foundation in 1996. It was established to help children and teens to avoid drugs and alcohol addiction. It rewards those who show high academic achievement. He received an honorary doctorate from Sienna College for his foundations work. He also serves as ambassador for WePlay. It is a website that encourages children to play sports and he gives tips on it through video.
